The Long Staff — usually called gun or gwan — is the most common weapon in Chinese martial arts. It shows up in almost every style, from Shaolin to Wing Chun, and it's often called the "ancestor of all weapons"
The Staff is the simplest and oldest weapon, and the body mechanics you learn with it transfer to everything else.

Unlike swords or spears, a Staff was a farm tool, a carrying pole, a walking aid, or a boat pole. That made it practical for monks, travelers, caravan escorts, militia recruits, and anyone who couldn't afford or legally carry a blade.
It also made it the classic weapon of rebellion and rural self-defense — a whole village could arm itself with sticks.

Traditional Staffs were commonly made of white wax wood, rattan, oak, and other dense woods were also used, sometimes with metal caps on the ends.

Length conventions vary by lineage. The classic benchmark is the eyebrow-height staff standing upright, it reaches roughly the practitioner's eyebrows. Longer cudgels of 2 meters and up appear in northern styles, while southern systems tend toward shorter, thicker, heavier Staffs used at closer range.

Core techniques include: chopping, horizontal sweeping, upward lifting, thrusting, springing or snapping, coiling/twisting, and the circular "cloud" and "flower" spins that connect movements and build momentum.

Practitioners learn to shift the grip along the shaft so either end becomes the striking end, to block with the middle and the end of the Staff, and to drive everything from waist rotation and stance changes rather than arms alone. Because a Staff has no edge or point, its effectiveness rests entirely on leverage, timing, and hitting power.
